Sean Spiller is running for governor in 2025 to challenge a system that’s rigged for the rich and powerful. As a high school science teacher, child of immigrants, and union leader, Sean understands the struggles of working New Jerseyans.
Sean’s mother is from Jamaica and his father is from New Zealand. Sean was born in Jamaica and grew up in Montville, New Jersey.
Sean went to Rutgers where he was a student athlete, playing hockey as team captain while completing his studies.
Sean began his teaching career at Kinnelon High School, where he taught honors physics, chemistry, and biochemistry.
In addition to his role as a science teacher, he served as the head hockey coach and assistant lacrosse coach at Kinnelon High School.
As mayor of Montclair, Sean worked hard to improve local infrastructure, enhance community services, and reduce the tax burden.
As NJEA President, Sean has been a champion for educational equity and workers' rights, drawing on his diverse experiences to advocate for New Jersey’s educators and students.
